Why is a credit card required to make a dining reservation?

Some restaurants or experiences require payment in advance. However, for most venues, we require your credit card to make a dining reservation so we can use it as a placeholder. In these cases, your credit card won’t be charged before you dine unless you: Don’t show up for your reservation, orFail to cancel or modify the reservation in accordance with the restaurant’s cancellation and modification policies If you don’t arrive for your reservation or fail to cancel in accordance with the cancellation policy, or if you fail to modify in accordance with the modifications policy and then need to cancel, the credit card you provide at the time of reservation will automatically be charged a per-person fee.
